Responsibility, support for service and remembering that God is the true inheritance
Numbers 18 reaffirms the responsibilities of priests and Levites after Korah’s rebellion. Aaron’s family bears the responsibility of priesthood; Levites are given to assist but must respect the boundaries of their service. God also establishes how priests and Levites are to be supported through Israel’s offerings and tithes. The chapter teaches accountability, appropriate support and the deeper truth that God Himself is the priestly inheritance.
1. Responsibility accompanies privilege
Aaron and his sons must “bear the iniquity” connected with sanctuary and priesthood. (Numbers 18:1). Those entrusted with holy service are accountable for how it is handled.
2. Helpers are a gift, not a threat
The Levites are joined to Aaron to assist him. (Numbers 18:2-4). Wise leadership values support rather than feeling diminished by it.
3. Different ministries still need boundaries
Levites may assist but cannot take over priestly functions. (Numbers 18:3,7). Cooperation works best when responsibilities are clear.
4. Guarding worship protects the whole community
The priests and Levites keep the charge so that wrath does not fall on Israel. (Numbers 18:5). Some service consists of preventing foreseeable spiritual harm.
5. Priesthood itself is described as a gift
God says, “I have given your priest’s office unto you as a service of gift.” (Numbers 18:7). Responsibility should be received gratefully, not as entitlement.
6. Those who serve may receive appropriate material support
Priests receive portions of offerings and Levites receive tithes. (Numbers 18:8-24). Scripture recognises the legitimacy of supporting those whose work prevents ordinary means of provision.
7. Support should not become exploitation
The portions are defined by God rather than left to unlimited priestly demand. Accountability belongs on both sides.
8. The best belongs to God
The first and best of oil, wine and wheat are given. (Numbers 18:12-13). Gratitude gives priority rather than leftovers.
9. God is the priest’s ultimate inheritance
Aaron is told, “I am thy part and thine inheritance.” (Numbers 18:20). The deepest wealth of God’s servants is not property but relationship with Him.
10. Those who receive support should themselves give
The Levites must offer a tenth of the tithe they receive. (Numbers 18:25-29). Receiving does not exempt anyone from generosity.
11. Give the best of what you receive
The Levites’ offering is to come from “the best thereof.” (Numbers 18:29). Gratitude should not pass on only what we least want.
12. The chapter restores confidence after rebellion
After the fear generated by Korah’s judgment, God restates how safe approach can continue through the priesthood. Judgment is followed by gracious provision.
13. Christ fulfils the mediatorial need
The Aaronic system required mortal priests who themselves needed cleansing. Jesus, raised to immortal life, provides the greater and continuing mediation believers need.

Numbers 18 teaches that spiritual responsibility is both burden and gift. God provides helpers and material support, but He also reminds His servants that their greatest inheritance is Himself.
