Practical Exhortations from Joshua 10

English

Keep covenant obligations, act with urgency and trust the God who fights for His purpose

Joshua 10 begins with the consequences of the Gibeonite covenant. Five Amorite kings attack Gibeon, and the people Joshua once spared by mistake now call for Israel’s help. Joshua honours the treaty and marches all night. God assures him, sends a devastating hailstorm and grants extraordinary prolonged daylight until the enemy coalition is defeated. The physical mechanism of the sun and moon event is not explained, and unsupported stories about modern computers discovering a ‘missing day’ should not be used. The chapter’s emphasis is simpler: God fought for Israel.

1. A promise creates future obligations

Gibeon’s appeal rests on Israel’s covenant. (Joshua 10:6). Keeping our word may require action we did not foresee when the promise was made.

2. Do not resent the cost of integrity

Joshua could have viewed Gibeon’s danger as an escape from an inconvenient treaty. Instead he goes to defend them.

3. God can work through consequences of earlier mistakes

The chapter does not undo Joshua 9. God now works within the situation created by Israel’s oath.

4. Assurance and strenuous effort belong together

God says, “Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand,” and Joshua marches all night. (Joshua 10:8-9). Promise energises effort.

5. Good leadership responds quickly when help is genuinely needed

Gibeon says, “slack not thy hand.” Joshua’s immediate night march shows urgency. (Joshua 10:6-9).

6. The decisive power remains God’s

The LORD discomfits the enemy and sends hailstones that kill more than Israel’s sword. (Joshua 10:10-11). Human action is real, but divine action is decisive.

7. Keep Israel’s warfare in its ancient covenant setting

These battles belong to the Canaanite conquest under direct divine command. Christians do not imitate them through physical religious warfare.

8. The Christian battle is spiritual

The practical parallel is perseverance against sin and error, using the armour of God rather than weapons against people.

9. Joshua asks boldly within a divinely given battle

He speaks concerning the sun and moon while pursuing the task God has promised to prosper. (Joshua 10:12-14). Bold prayer is strongest when aligned with revealed purpose.

10. Use the language Scripture itself uses

The text says the sun stood still and the moon stayed. This is normal observational language. We do not need to force an astronomical mechanism into the passage.

11. Do not invent evidence to defend a miracle

The popular claim that NASA or computer calculations discovered Joshua’s missing day has no credible basis and should not be used. Faith should not depend on fabricated apologetics.

12. The extraordinary day serves a stated purpose

The unique feature is that God hearkened in this way and “the LORD fought for Israel.” (Joshua 10:14). The theological point is clearer than the mechanism.

13. Finish urgent work before dealing with secondary matters

Joshua seals the five kings in a cave and continues the pursuit before returning to them. (Joshua 10:16-21). Prioritisation matters in leadership.

14. Turn defeated threats into encouragement

Joshua has commanders place their feet on the kings’ necks and says, “Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage.” (Joshua 10:24-25). Past victory becomes courage for future service.

15. Even enemies under judgment are handled according to the Law

The executed kings are taken down before sunset in accordance with Deuteronomy 21. (Joshua 10:26-27). Victory does not remove legal restraint.

16. Repeated success should still be attributed to God

The southern campaign is summarised with the reason: “because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.” (Joshua 10:42).

17. Christ will ultimately execute God’s righteous judgment

Present disciples do not take that authority into their own hands. Scripture assigns final judgment of the nations to the returned Christ, whose reign will establish righteousness and peace.

Closing thought

Joshua 10 combines covenant loyalty, energetic action and extraordinary divine help. Israel’s mistake in chapter 9 becomes an obligation in chapter 10, and Joshua honours it. Faith keeps promises, acts diligently and leaves the decisive victory with God.
