Learning to hear before speaking and delivering difficult truth faithfully
In an age when the word of the LORD is rare, Samuel learns to recognise God’s call. His first prophetic task is not easy: he must tell Eli that judgment is coming upon his house. The chapter turns a listening child into an established prophet.
1. Scarcity of God’s word is a serious spiritual condition
The word of the LORD was precious—rare—in those days. (1 Samuel 3:1).
2. Do not allow the light to go out in our generation
The lamp of God had not yet gone out. (1 Samuel 3:3). The image naturally challenges us to preserve the light of Scripture.
3. Promptness is valuable even before understanding is complete
Samuel repeatedly runs to Eli when he thinks he is called. (1 Samuel 3:4-8).
4. Learn to recognise the voice of Scripture
Eli teaches Samuel how to respond: “Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth.” (1 Samuel 3:9-10).
5. Listening comes before teaching
Samuel becomes a prophet by first learning to hear.
6. God’s word may be painful to deliver
Samuel’s first message concerns judgment on Eli’s house. (1 Samuel 3:11-14).
7. Fear must not make us hide truth
Samuel is afraid, but when Eli presses him, he tells everything. (1 Samuel 3:15-18).
8. Religious sacrifice cannot compensate for deliberate unrepented sin
The judgment on Eli’s house cannot be erased by offering while the underlying rebellion remains. (1 Samuel 3:14).
9. Submission accepts God’s judgment
Eli responds, “It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.” (1 Samuel 3:18).
10. A true prophet is confirmed by reliable words
God lets none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground. (1 Samuel 3:19).
11. God can restore clear teaching after spiritual decline
The LORD again appears at Shiloh by His word. (1 Samuel 3:21).
12. Our prayer should include willingness to hear, not merely requests to speak
‘Speak, for thy servant heareth’ remains a powerful model for Bible reading.
