Covenant friendship, costly loyalty and seeking evidence before assuming the worst
1 Samuel 20 establishes that Saul’s intention to kill David is settled. Jonathan initially finds that hard to believe, so David proposes a test. The new-moon feast exposes Saul’s purpose, and Jonathan chooses covenant loyalty over dynastic self-interest.
1. Do not act on suspicion alone when evidence can be tested
David asks Jonathan to discover Saul’s actual intention. (1 Samuel 20:1-10).
2. Friendship should be grounded in truth
Jonathan does not simply tell David what he wants to hear.
3. Covenant loyalty can cost personal advantage
Jonathan is natural heir to Saul, yet protects the man who will displace his dynasty.
4. Put God’s purpose above personal ambition
Saul argues that Jonathan’s kingdom cannot stand while David lives. (1 Samuel 20:31). Jonathan refuses that logic.
5. Ask for enduring kindness, not temporary sentiment
Jonathan asks David to show the kindness of the LORD to his house. (1 Samuel 20:14-17).
6. Good agreements consider future generations
Their covenant reaches beyond the two friends.
7. A discreet signal can protect life without unnecessary confrontation
The arrows communicate Saul’s hostility safely. (1 Samuel 20:18-40).
8. Not everyone needs to know confidential details
The lad carrying arrows does not understand the signal.
9. Saul’s attack on Jonathan exposes the depth of his obsession
When Jonathan defends David, Saul casts a javelin at his own son. (1 Samuel 20:30-33).
10. Grief and faith can coexist
David and Jonathan weep deeply when they part. (1 Samuel 20:41).
11. Providence can include painful separation
Jonathan says, in effect, that the LORD is between them even as David must leave.
12. Keep covenants when circumstances change
David later honours Jonathan’s house through Mephibosheth.
13. Selfless friendship is a spiritual strength
Jonathan’s greatness lies partly in accepting that God’s purpose for David matters more than his own succession.
14. The exile is not the end of the promise
David leaves the court, but the path toward kingship continues.
Closing thought
1 Samuel 20 shows friendship at its strongest: honest, evidence-based, covenantal and costly. Jonathan protects David even when David’s future appears to diminish his own.
