Practical Exhortations from 2 Samuel 5

English

Shepherd-kingship, Jerusalem and seeking fresh direction after success

All Israel finally comes to David at Hebron and anoints him king. David captures Jerusalem and makes it his capital. The Philistines attack twice; David enquires both times and receives different instructions. The chapter joins shepherd leadership, national unity and continuing dependence on God.

1. God’s appointment may take years to receive public recognition

David was anointed long before all Israel accepts him.

2. Leadership is shepherding

Israel recalls God’s word that David should feed His people. (2 Samuel 5:2).

3. Kingship exists for the people, not the ruler

David later recognises that God exalted his kingdom for Israel’s sake. (2 Samuel 5:12).

4. Covenant unity matters

The elders make covenant with David at Hebron. (2 Samuel 5:3).

5. A central place can help unify a divided people

Jerusalem becomes a politically strategic capital not previously belonging exclusively to Judah or northern tribes.

6. Do not allow enemy mockery to define possibility

The Jebusites confidently say David cannot enter, but Zion is captured.

7. Success should increase dependence, not reduce it

When Philistines attack, David enquires of God. (2 Samuel 5:19).

8. Give God credit for breakthrough

David names the victory Baal-perazim because the LORD broke forth upon his enemies.

9. Do not repeat yesterday’s method merely because it worked

The second Philistine attack receives different instructions. (2 Samuel 5:22-25).

10. Wait for God’s signal

David moves when he hears the appointed sound in the trees.

11. Strategy and faith are compatible

Flanking movement is practical strategy under divine direction.

12. Beware expansion of household arrangements contrary to God’s ideal

The multiplication of wives is recorded but not endorsed.

13. The true Son of David will shepherd perfectly

David’s reign points toward Jesus, who will rule Israel and the nations in righteousness.

Closing thought

2 Samuel 5 teaches that good leadership serves people and keeps asking God for direction. Even repeated problems may require different responses.
