SERVICE OF WORKERS • AARON’S SONS • LEVITES GIVEN TO THE PRIESTS • TAKEN IN PLACE OF THE FIRSTBORN • GERSHON, KOHATH AND MERARI • 273 REDEEMED
CHAPTER OVERVIEW
Numbers 3 separates Levi for sanctuary ministry. Aaron’s priestly family serves at the altar; the wider Levite tribe is brought near as an assisting/guarding ministry and is taken in place of Israel’s firstborn.
The chapter also contains a genuine numerical difficulty: the three Levitical family totals sum to 22,300 in the Masoretic/KJV figures, while verse 39 states 22,000. Mansfield offers explanations, but none is proved by the text.
AARON’S PRIESTLY FAMILY — NUMBERS 3:1–4
Numbers 3:1–4 — Nadab and Abihu remembered
Aaron’s sons are named: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. Nadab and Abihu died before Yahweh after offering strange/unauthorised fire and left no sons; Eleazar and Ithamar continue priestly service.
The opening reminder links sacred privilege with accountability rather than prestige alone.
LEVITES BROUGHT NEAR AND GIVEN — NUMBERS 3:5–10
Numbers 3:5–8 — keep the charge and serve
Levi is brought near to Aaron to minister, keep the charge of the congregation and sanctuary, and perform the work of the tabernacle.
Levitical ministry and Aaronic priesthood are related but distinct. The Levites assist and guard; Aaron and his sons hold the priestly office.
Numbers 3:9–10 — “given, given” and protected priesthood
The Levites are described with an emphatic doubled form as given to Aaron and his sons from among Israel. Aaron and his sons are appointed to keep their priesthood, while an unauthorised intruder who approaches that office incurs the covenant penalty.
LEVITES IN PLACE OF THE FIRSTBORN — NUMBERS 3:11–13
Numbers 3:11–13 — redemption establishes Yahweh’s claim
Yahweh takes the Levites “instead of” all Israel’s firstborn. The background is the Exodus: when Egypt’s firstborn were struck, Yahweh sanctified Israel’s firstborn to Himself.
This is a literal covenant replacement arrangement within Israel. It should not be confused with later theological debates over substitution in Christ’s sacrifice.
LEVITICAL FAMILIES AND CAMP POSITIONS — NUMBERS 3:14–38
Numbers 3:14–20 — numbered from one month upward
Levite males are counted from one month old, unlike the military census from age twenty. The three main houses are Gershon, Kohath and Merari.
Numbers 3:21–26 — Gershon west
Gershonites camp west and care for the tabernacle coverings, tent, hangings, screens and cords.
Numbers 3:27–32 — Kohath south
Kohathites camp south and are responsible for ark, table, lampstand, altars, sanctuary vessels and veil. Eleazar oversees the chief sanctuary materials.
The furniture itself must first be covered by priests before Kohathites carry it, as chapter 4 makes explicit.
Numbers 3:33–37 — Merari north
Merarites camp north and care for the structural frames/boards, bars, pillars, sockets, pegs and cords.
Numbers 3:38 — Moses, Aaron and priests east
Moses, Aaron and Aaron’s sons camp on the east before the tabernacle and keep the sanctuary charge on Israel’s behalf.
THE NUMERICAL DIFFICULTY — NUMBERS 3:39
Numbers 3:39 — 22,000 versus family totals of 22,300
Verse 39 states a total of 22,000 Levite males from one month upward. Yet the KJV/Masoretic family figures are Gershon 7,500, Kohath 8,600 and Merari 6,200, which together are 22,300.
Mansfield mentions two proposed explanations: a scribal numeral difference in one clan figure, or exclusion of 300 Levite firstborns because they already belonged to Yahweh as firstborn. Neither explanation is stated by Numbers and neither should be presented as certain.
THE FIRSTBORN AND THE 273 EXCESS — NUMBERS 3:40–51
Numbers 3:40–43 — Israel’s firstborn counted by name
Israel’s firstborn males from one month upward number 22,273. The Levites are taken for Yahweh in place of Israel’s firstborn, together with the corresponding cattle arrangement.
Numbers 3:44–51 — five shekels for each of the 273
The 273 firstborn beyond the stated 22,000 Levites are redeemed at five sanctuary shekels each. Verse 50 records the resulting sum as 1,365 shekels, which Moses gives to Aaron and his sons according to Yahweh’s command.
The exact reckoning underlines that Yahweh’s claim upon the firstborn is administered rather than treated approximately.
PRINCIPAL THEMES
• Levites are brought near as ministers/guardians, while Aaron’s sons retain the priestly office.
• The Levites are taken in place of Israel’s firstborn because redemption from Egypt established Yahweh’s claim.
• Each Levitical family receives a defined sphere and camp position.
• Kohath’s sacred furniture charge is later bounded by priestly covering rules.
• The stated total 22,000 conflicts arithmetically with the three Masoretic clan totals of 22,300.
• Mansfield’s proposed explanations for the 300-person discrepancy remain hypotheses, not textual facts.
• The 273 excess firstborn are individually redeemed at the fixed sanctuary valuation.
