Ask for wisdom to serve—and remain watchful when added blessings arrive
Solomon begins his reign by seeking God at Gibeon and asking for wisdom and knowledge to govern God’s people. God grants the request and adds wealth and honour. Yet the chapter closes with horses, chariots and Egyptian trade—the very areas the Law had warned kings to handle carefully.
1. Begin responsibility by seeking God
Solomon goes to the tabernacle and brazen altar at Gibeon. (2 Chronicles 1:3-6).
2. Gibeon’s high place is not presented here as apostate worship
The Mosaic tabernacle and altar are still there during this transitional period.
3. Worship should precede administration
Solomon sacrifices before the major decisions of kingship.
4. Ask for what helps you serve others
He requests wisdom and knowledge to judge God’s people. (2 Chronicles 1:10).
5. Remember whose people they are
Solomon repeatedly recognises Israel as belonging to God.
6. Right priorities matter
He does not ask first for wealth, long life or victory.
7. God can add blessings not directly requested
Riches and honour are granted alongside wisdom.
8. Blessing can later become a test
Wealth itself is not evil, but accumulation can challenge obedience.
9. Read success beside the Law that governs it
Deuteronomy had warned kings about multiplying horses and returning toward Egypt.
10. Do not assume prosperity proves every policy is wise
The closing trade notices introduce tensions that grow later.
11. Technical translation uncertainties should not dominate the lesson
The KJV ‘linen yarn’ represents a difficult ancient trade expression.
12. Wisdom should remain under Scripture
Being wise does not exempt a king from the boundaries God has already given.
13. The greater Son of David possesses wisdom without Solomon’s later failures
Christ will govern God’s Kingdom in perfect righteousness.
Closing thought
2 Chronicles 1 begins beautifully: Solomon asks for wisdom to serve. The chapter also warns that the blessings added afterwards still need to be governed by the wisdom of God’s word.
