Hear from heaven and forgive: prayer grounded in covenant and mercy
Solomon’s dedication prayer repeatedly asks God to hear from heaven, forgive and restore. The temple is the appointed earthly focus, but Solomon again insists that even the highest heavens cannot contain God. The prayer moves through guilt, defeat, drought, famine, strangers, war and captivity.
1. Prayer should begin with God’s character and promises
Solomon praises the covenant-keeping God. (2 Chronicles 6:14).
2. A temple does not contain God
“The heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee.” (2 Chronicles 6:18).

14. Prayer is strongest when covenant confidence and repentance meet
Solomon asks because God has promised and because people need forgiveness.
