Covenant kindness: Mephibosheth at the king’s table
David deliberately seeks someone from Saul’s house whom he can bless for Jonathan’s sake. Mephibosheth, disabled since childhood, is brought from Lo-debar, restored to Saul’s estate and given a permanent place at David’s table “as one of the king’s sons.”
1. Remember promises when you are finally in a position to fulfil them
David does not forget his covenant with Jonathan after becoming secure.
2. Ask whom you can bless, not merely whom you need to remove
David’s first question is about showing kindness. (2 Samuel 9:1).
3. Covenant love becomes practical
Kindness results in restored property, provision and fellowship.
4. Do not define a person by disability
Mephibosheth’s lameness is repeatedly mentioned but never makes him less welcome.
5. Fear may be based on what we expect from ordinary human power
Mephibosheth falls before David, perhaps expecting dynastic vengeance.
6. Grace answers fear with ‘Fear not’
David’s reassurance is followed by concrete action. (2 Samuel 9:7).
7. Favour can be given for another’s sake
Mephibosheth receives kindness because of Jonathan.
8. The royal table expresses belonging
He eats continually at the king’s table. (2 Samuel 9:7,10,13).
9. Grace can restore what seemed permanently lost
Saul’s land is restored to Jonathan’s son.
10. Others may be appointed to support the restored person
Ziba and his household are assigned practical responsibilities.
11. Covenant mercy should outlive political rivalry
David does not treat Saul’s descendants as automatic enemies.
12. The gospel contains a similar pattern of undeserved welcome
Believers receive fellowship and inheritance through God’s grace in Christ.
13. Standing rests on grace, not usefulness
Mephibosheth is welcomed as a son, not because he can strengthen David’s army.
