The Word revives the work and honest scrutiny need not stop it
The stalled temple project moves again when Haggai and Zechariah prophesy. Zerubbabel and Jeshua rise and build, and the prophets help them. Persian officials investigate, but unlike earlier opponents they do not immediately stop the work. The elders answer openly and place their confidence in both God’s providence and the existing royal decree.
1. Discouragement is answered by the Word
Haggai and Zechariah speak in the Name of the God of Israel. (Ezra 5:1).
2. Prophecy should strengthen action
The prophets do not merely speak; they help the builders. (Ezra 5:2).
3. Spiritual renewal can restart practical work
Words become stones, timber, organisation and renewed labour.
4. Not every official question is persecution
Tatnai asks who authorised the work. (Ezra 5:3).
5. Do not answer fair scrutiny as though it were hostility
The investigation is treated differently from the malicious campaign in chapter 4.
6. God’s providence can work through due process
The officials do not stop construction while the matter is referred to Darius.
7. The ‘eye of God’ describes watchful providence
It is biblical language for divine oversight, not physical anatomy.

The elders do not hide who they are or why the first temple fell.

They acknowledge that their fathers provoked God and that Babylonian destruction was judgment.

The exile was permitted by the God of heaven and earth.

The builders appeal to Cyrus’ decree.

A royal archive search becomes part of God’s means of protection.

Both are associated with the foundation period, but Ezra does not explicitly identify them as one man.
14. Faith can continue working while an answer is pending
The builders do not stop merely because scrutiny exists.

Ezra 5 shows how God revives discouraged people: His Word restores courage, honest answers withstand scrutiny, and providence can work through ordinary administration.
