Exodus 31: Bezalel, Oholiab, and the Sabbath Sign

English

H. P. Mansfield Bible Notes — Exodus 31

Bezalel and Oholiab • Spirit-given craftsmanship • the Sabbath as a sign • the tablets of testimony

Exodus 31 closes the sanctuary instructions before the golden-calf interruption. Yahweh appoints and equips craftsmen for the work, then insists that even sacred construction must stop for the Sabbath. The chapter joins gift and obedience: skill does not authorize alteration of the pattern, and zeal for holy work does not excuse breaking another Divine command. The attached English Word document contains the complete verse-by-verse study.

Craftsmen filled for the work — Exodus 31:1–11

Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur, of Judah, is called by name and filled with the Spirit of God, wisdom, understanding, knowledge and skilled workmanship. The passage treats design, metalwork, stone-setting, woodcraft and practical skill as gifts used in Yahweh’s service. Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of Dan, is appointed with him, and wisdom is given to other skilled workers: the sanctuary work is collaborative. Their ability remains under command, and all is made according to what Yahweh commanded.

The Sabbath as a covenant sign — Exodus 31:12–17

The Sabbath is a sign between Yahweh and Israel throughout their generations, testifying that Yahweh sanctifies them. Six days are for work; the seventh is a Sabbath of rest, holy to Yahweh. The command is not suspended for sanctuary construction: holy work does not replace obedience to holy rest. Ezekiel 20:12 later repeats the sign-and-sanctification theme.

The tablets of testimony — Exodus 31:18

When Yahweh finishes speaking with Moses on Sinai, He gives him the two tablets of testimony, written with the finger of God. The sanctuary instructions culminate in the covenant testimony that governs Israel’s worship and life.

Gifted work and obedient rest

  • God-given craftsmanship includes practical making as well as public speech.
  • Skilled service is shared among appointed workers.
  • Creativity remains subject to the revealed pattern.
  • Sanctuary work does not cancel the Sabbath command.
  • The Sabbath is a covenant sign of Yahweh’s sanctifying relationship with Israel.
  • The tablets of testimony anchor the sanctuary instructions in the covenant word.
